AI Data Centers Move to 800 VDC: SiC and GaN Open a New Field for Power Devices

NVIDIA is driving 800 VDC distribution into deployment in 2026 with racks approaching 1 MW. The rebuilt power path means a new demand wave for SiC, GaN and companion components.

AI data center power density is breaking the ceiling of legacy 12V/48V architectures. NVIDIA has positioned 800 VDC distribution as the power backbone of the next-generation AI factory: 13.8 kV AC incoming power is rectified once to 800 VDC at the facility and fed straight to racks, removing multiple AC/DC conversion stages to support racks approaching 1 MW.

A rebuilt power path means a rebuilt BOM

  • Grid-side rectification and transformation rely mainly on SiC devices for high-voltage handling;
  • Rack-level conversion from 800V down to 50V and below uses GaN, whose high-frequency switching shrinks magnetics and board area;
  • Companion parts — eFuses, hot-swap controllers, isolated gate drivers and power inductors — upgrade in step; TI and others have published server-PSU evolution reference designs;
  • TrendForce expects SiC and GaN adoption in data centers to rise from about 17% today to 30% by 2030.

Supply chain impact

The 800 VDC ecosystem enters deployment in 2026: NVIDIA runs dedicated sessions at GTC 2026 and power-infrastructure vendors are expanding capacity. For power-device and passive buyers this stacks two curves — legacy server power parts keep rising in price and lead time while new 800V parts are still ramping. Securing design-win positions and capacity early on new platforms will decide who faces shortages later.
